Some interesting news today with Jonathon (Rudy) Ford moving to CB and the news that Dee Ford and some others on D will miss at least the first game. Depth is going to be a big issue for us on D, this year.
I’ve been so excited about the offense, I haven’t really worried about the defense until now. You aren’t lying…we are thin. Going to be very interesting to see if these guys switching positions and moving around can take advantage of the opportunity.
Just out of curiosity – is Justin Garrett one of the guys expected to miss the opener? I got that feeling from the vague description of his injury and the fact he was in a walking boot just a couple of days ago (and possibly still). That would be an enormous loss.
Spencer, I think Garrett is expected to play. And if not, apparently Therezie has been playing fantastic at the Star position, as well. I think the coaches have even said that if it were the season, Garrett would be capable of playing right now, but they’ve been holding him out still to make sure he’s 100% when the season does start.
We may be somewhat depleted with injuries/suspensions and what not on D, but I tend to believe that with the talent we have recruited, we should still be solid so long as the staff can coach them up, get them motivated & focused and physically prepared. We have some real talent, time for them to gel into a Monster Squad.
Thanks for the MASH unit update. Looks like Dee Ford is likely to miss at least the first 2 games. We’re about to see what a Rodney Garner coach ‘em up crash course looks like b/c he got a lot of college football skill to instill in several kids that might not be enough to vote yet.
I never did provide my allegedly in-depth analysis / SWAG on how 2013 will end up.
I hedged my bet earlier on needing at least adequate QB play to be successful. I really think we’ll get that in 9 or 10 games. There are still some teams that we don’t match up well in the trenches. But if we are sound fundamentally on defense…and I think we will be – we get 8 W’s. If the injury beg keeps biting us
OR we are yet to show SEC caliber physicality on the D line, then 6-6 is about the best we’ll get.
Orange and Blue colored glass prediction is still limited to 10 wins and that’s dependent on all the question marks being answered with better than expected results.
Bottom line 8-4 with an overtime loss to Ga Tech in the Chik-Fil-A Bowl….after which we grease the tracks on Marta and some commuters slide to Macon the next day. :)
Yes, a Wreck Tech reference – which doesn’t exactly resonate with younger AU fans…but it’s history. :)
Wow – did not know we open w/ Ark in 2014. That ought to be interesting. A coach usually has his best year in year 2 – Gus AND the pontificating interloper from Wisconsin will both be in their 2nd year – and probably still not eye-to-eye on the Speed offense and its “dangers” to player safety. lol
Spencer, the SEC released the 2014 schedule today. Ours is… brutal. By whatever analysis SBNation uses, it’s the toughest in the SEC. Somehow UGA ended up with the easiest schedule AGAIN. We go TO Georgia and Bama, next year. Which is to be expected after this season, but it’s still going to be horrible. We’ll have an FCS team in between (Samford, I believe), but that’s still going to be a brutal way to close the season.
I saw our 2014 schedule and was as shocked…wowza. Tell you what though, if our guys can hold together this year, learn a lot, get the chemistry flowing and build each other up like certain past teams who came together after adversity (’04 and ’10 I’m looking at you!) it could be pure awesomeness…but I need to take off my binoculars and look at what’s right in front of us and not ahead.
I have been seeing some in the sports arena picking us as the dark horse for the year, which I find interesting. Almost here!! EEEEEEEeeeeee!!
