Might be awesome…Might be a train wreck. We won’t know for quite some time. Offensively there are areas I am hopeful about (QB, RB, Receivers) and areas I’m concerned about (OL, playcalling, philosophy). It won’t take long to see if Lindsay is his own man or an OC in name only. If we run on 1st down 85% of the time and almost never throw a deep ball (except for the obligatory Statue of Liberty play) and treat the TE like an ineligible receiver, then The still has full control of the offense. Regardless, WDE and welcome back to the Plains to coach Lindsay!

Rumor had it that Gus approached the Athletic Dept about hiring Art or Kendall Briles for OC and was flatly turned down. I know things went real badly at Baylor from a conduct standpoint which made either of these guys a no go but under different circumstances being able to have one of these guys as the OC would have changed AU’s offense into something we have never seen…which would have been fun.

Bottom line, we hired somebody and like ya’ll aptly pointed out, it’s all talk until something happens on the football field.

That wasn’t a coyote, it was a baby crying. ;) Our newest addition, Tucker, made his arrival Jan 20. I really wished it was firing football season, because they’re wasn’t crap on TV the Saturday I was there!

We’re doing good, and I’m really hoping our Tigers got a good hire. The recruiting class looks pretty good.

The news regarding D Craig’s firing at LSU was very interesting. We could use him as a recruiter for sure, but I’m sure he left AU for a reason.

My best friend at work is an AU grad but LSU fan (he was born in NOLA to LSU parents…I give him a pass). He said the performance of the LSU receivers (i.e., too many dropped passes) this past year led to his dismissal. They kept him through signing day due to his known skills as a recruiter, but showed him the door right after that. Of course Ed Orgeron may have had a favorite guy that he wanted all along but felt the timing wasn’t good until after signing day (in deference to both the need to keep Craig out on the recruiting trail and as a courtesy to the guy he wanted to bring in – who may have been obligated to stay where he was until after signing day).

I think he’s burned the AU bridge for the time being but one needs only to look at Bill Oliver to see how time heals pretty much all wounds when it comes to coaches that left AU under bad circumstances but were welcomed back over time.

Congrats to Bruce Pearl and his boys – 82-77 W over uat in Tloosa! Season sweep over the Tide! WDE! uat made it very interesting at the end they trailed by 14 with just over 2 minutes left, then cut it to 3 with 24 seconds to go. Regardless, I’ll take a W over uat any day and in any sport.

The personal side of coaching hit home this week. With the dismissal of Scott Fountain AU lost an outstanding recruiter (this was widely known for many years). What goes unreported is the personal toll that the coaching carousel exacts on the coaches themselves. Fountain has a son at my son’s school and I had a chance to visit with him at the beginning of the school year. Delightful guy. He coached at my wife’s old HS so we had that as a topic of interest, but I probably could have talked to him about anything and had a fun time doing it. He’ll move on to some other gig and he’ll do well. I wish him the best but just wish he could have stayed. Alas, that’s the life of a college football coach.

I tried to make a post the other night after the AU loss to Ole Miss with my observation that we’re looking at an NIT bid – and that’s if we finish fairly strong. Getting swept by a very average Ole Miss team (losing big leads in both) pretty much ended any real chance of an NCAA bid. The fact Ole Miss went 27-31 from the line while we were 5-8 essentially told the story. Still very proud of the team and Bruce Pearl – who is a gem of a guy and great coach. Should continue to get better as long as he’s here. WDE!

Our AU bball team got a much needed win last night at LSU. In fairness this is perhaps the worst SEC team in the last 25 years…they have 1 W in conference this year (1-14). Still it’s a W and it guarantees AU a winning season, which they haven’t had since 2009. They have an excellent Ark team up next (likely L) then UGA in Athens (toss up), then Mizzou at home (near certain W). They would have to win all three to finish the regular season at 9-9 and have 20 wins in the regular season, but considering last year they only won 5 SEC games all year, this is a major step up. Regardless, I’m still optimistic about the future of AU hoops – Men’s and Women’s. WDE!

It’s been 24 days since someone not named Spencer Lee posted on here. Let’s make this more than a one person party. We don’t need to see an uninterrupted run of my observations. That would KILL the ratings folks… ;) But while I’m out here let me give a big WDE to ya’ll for absolutely no reason at all! :)

BTW, just missed a historic milestone. A week ago today marked the 125th anniversary of the first football game in the Deep South. As you all probably know that was AU-10 UGA-0 at Piedmont Park in the ATL (back when the population of Atlanta was around 70k…the 1890 census had 65,533 and the 1900 census was 89,872 so that number is a pretty good guess). This would make 1892 Atlanta about the size of Dothan. Anyway, belated happy b’day to players that would be almost 150 if they were still alive today! :)

Spencer’s been busy here! Read all your comments. Our Basketball team is right now a Jekyll and Hyde story. But they have been fun to watch. Our baseball team is generating some excitement too! And as always the softball team is killing it on the mound! Even our tennis teams are showing tremendous improvement. All in all, AU athletics is exciting. Now just to beat UGA and UA in November on the gridiron! :)

Good observation re: the Jeckle and Hyde reference. Silver lining here is there is more Jeckle and less Hyde this year. Also agree with your take on improvement in a number of teams at AU. Perhaps none as hotter than ladies tennis. I, too, am hoping for some serious carry over to our gridiron boys. Too much Jeckle and Hyde from them last year as well. Til next time! WDE!

HAHAHA! Funny you should ask. I had Duke WINNING IT ALL…..DOH! As for Xavier I had them winning once or twice but not sure after that. Three of my final four will be back at their dorms watching the rest of the tournament. So, after a 14-2 start on day one, it’s been pretty much a grease fire. :) How’s your bracket faring?

I was at my son’s game so I missed it as well. What I know is the scrimmage was first team offense v. second time defense AND as always they don’t let the defense do some of the things that can actually challenge an offense (e.g., blitz). But on the other hand it’s “two hand touch” on the QBs so that negates what they could do running the ball – and Stidham has shown he can do that. He’s not Nick Marshall but he’s plenty mobile. All that considered one definite positive is the return of the vertical passing game. Stidham hit two long throws perfectly and other QBs did as well. For me, THAT was what I have longed to see like nothing else. If we can add that to what we all know what we can do on the ground, then the sky is the limit.

    Thanks SL!

I feel that this year could be a breakout year. On paper, there is no reason why it should not be. If we can’t pull it together this year, then I think a change needs to be made. But I’m quite hopeful!

  35. Spencer Lee
    Posted April 12, 2017 at 12:57 pm | Permalink

I’m hopeful as well…there is reason for some optimism. There are holes to fill – particularly on defense – but there are enough capable players where we need them and most importantly with some new ideas on offense with a QB w/ a major upside, we could be dangerous from week one.
