Mascots and Football Infallability.

Ann Coulter has been getting mad at liberals for using war widows to further liberal causes- since nobody looks good when they disagree with war widows. On this note, it makes you wonder if it’s ok to cheer against a team that has been through a tragic loss. Auburn has done a pretty good job at losing to teams that have been through tough, non football related, losses- so it’s usually not an issue for us. This past year, Auburn lost to LSU after Katrina. In 2001, Auburn went to New York to play Syracuse just weeks after 9/11. Auburn lost to them too. While it would’ve been cool to win those games, I suppose if we have to lose games, those are the type of games to lose.

On the other hand, teams like Alabama like to exploit misery felt by other teams. Weeks after Southern Miss was practically destroyed, Bama fans bought thousands of oil paintings commemorating the beating.

Add class to your manufactured home.

Furthermore, their students and alumni became outraged when the administration suggested they not tell the hurricane victims to ‘go to hell’.

You can say Auburn has the better school (it’s true), you can say Auburn has a better football team (true), you can say Auburn fans are nicer than Alabama fans (true). But, you can’t say Auburn fans take football more seriously than Alabama fans.

A guy got mad at me once for calling Auburn fans “Auburn fans”, he said there’s no such thing as an Auburn fan… instead, there’s an “Auburn Family”. Some football fans get really irritated by schematics like that. Some people get really mad when outsiders call Auburn’s mascot an eagle or the ‘war eagle’. It’s time for us, the Auburn Family, to admit it;

Tigers AND War Eagles are our mascots.

“It’s not our mascot. It’s uhh… a
personification of our battle cry.
Yeah, that’s the ticket”

What’s wrong with being War Eagles though? It’s ok to have two mascots. Thousands of teams are nicknamed the “Tigers”, but you can’t get more original than the “War Eagle”. Don’t get me wrong, we need to keep the Tigers as the main mascot, because while not original, the tiger is the perfect mascot animal. Aside from the polar bear, it’s probably the only animal that’s both cuddly looking and known for eating humans.

Many Auburn fans say they’re tired of the ‘underdog’ label that’s usually attached to the team. That’s baloney*. The essence of sports is doing better than you’re expected by others. Who cares when Mississippi State is predicted to suck and then proceed to suck?

Also, wasn’t it awesome in 2000 when Alabama was ranked #3 in the preseason to only win three games that year? Wasn’t it cool in 2004 when nobody thought Auburn would do anything awesome when in fact we were so awesome that they the NCAA didn’t even have a trophy to represent the awesomeness we achieved?

Auburn has made a reputation recently of performing very differently than the media predicts. We’re picked to win the SEC this year, which usually is a bad thing. But it seems like EVERYBODY realizes Auburn does this. The writers ranking Auburn so high know that Auburn always performs oppositely than predicted- meaning that Auburn will go on to do the opposite of predicted and actually win the SEC, national, world championships.

Preseason predictions and previews are coming soon. Here’s a preview:

We’re going undefeated.

I was going to make a Quentin Groves for Heisman page, but after researching other “So-and-so for Heisman” websites, I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s next to impossible to make a page like that without seeming really gay. However, new and cool features are coming.

War Eagle!
